I watch avidly.
It's not "just a game" "just a reality show".
It's inspiring.
And this year, this year they are adding so many morethings. Donating to food banks, meals with Rocco, training with Sugar Ray. These people, instead of being made to feel like "lazy American pigs" and recognized as real people, who've suffered with an addiction, and who are stronger for it. I think every person struggling - really struggling with their weight - deserves to be on this show. Deserves to have an experience like this.
I want my cousin to audition.
I think: If you had a chance to go to a ranch. To put yourself first. To sleep, to eat, to exercise and to make what looks like loving life long friends. If you had a chance after all these years of putting yourself last to put yourself first, to focus on yourself, why WOULDN'T you try?
It's not really something you could wish for someone else. Or suggest. And sure, I'll be embarrassed when Stacy and Clinton show up here with my $5000 visa so I understand the not wanting to be in the public eye portrayed as someone who "needs help".
But I see these people. Running with their kids. Crying for the years they've lost, weeping for the pain they've felt for themselves. And they work hard. And come alive. It's not a show about weight. It's a show about overcoming.
Imagine the possibilities.
Who doesn't owe it to themselves?

I catch this show occasionally, as my wife watches it. While I root for the people, I just hate all the manipulation they go through for the sake of ratings . . .
like having the women wear the tank tops and spandex on the scales, and the men having to go shirtless on the scales??
that's just tasteless...even as much as i like the show.
it's schaudenfraude...i almost feel like the ratings come from people who are sitting on their couches going 'god, i'm fat, but at least i'm not THAT fat!'.
but besides that...the people on the show are quite inspiring.
and i love bob.
Not a fan. I get that they are supposed to be better and feel better in the end. But how long are they away from home for? How much time is spent with a trainor telling you what to do? Can they succeed after the fact on thier own? Can someone who does Jenny Craig ever eat real food again?
Interesting comments but all I can say is this. I choose to believe regardless of manipulation, ratings or otherwise, that people leave for the better.
That the show is about challenging yourself to be your best. So to me, to say "Can they succeed after on their own" is like saying that someone will forget how to cook after they leave culinary school."
Whether they succeed or not is up to them. But they cook their own meals, learn to exercise and, most importantly, learn that they CAN overcome these tremendous hardships. Like leaving family. Like climbing a mountain. Some of these people have such damaged self esteem. Not because they are overweight but because they feel like they've quit themselves.
I don't watch to feel better about myself, I watch because I am so impressed by their spirit and I want for them to win at their own battle.
(and no, eating Jenny Craig is stupid. Thats why WW is a better plan. Teaches about real food. Not the same as the ranch. Cleary at the ranch they work out daily and thats not practical at home but it's not like someone else worked out FOR them. They still gained knowledge and strength)
