So a year ago yesterday, I went on a quasi blind date. I wanted to be adventurous, if not in application, certainly in spirit. Fortunately for me I had a cunning frock, or replica thereof, already on when the invite was extended. A vneck black shirt, black skirt, black shoes.
The last minute invite. That I accepted. And wanted to cancel. But forced myself to go.
I took the train, and got off at the wrong stop. The Ruggles orange line is nowhere near the MFA green line, contrary to what their website says. I flirted with the big dig worker as I walked towards my date, cell phone in hand. Twas muggy, overcast, and my feet hurt in my too tight black shoes that I left on so I looked cuter.
He had on a dark blue suit, with stripes, a red tie, white shirt, dorky shoes and bushy hair. After I said to friends "Have you ever seen the Simpsons? Think "Mr Burns." It was, and still is, in fact "His Worst Suit". He lost the umbrella on the date and I was certain that I had no romantic interest. Whatsoever.
By date two the hair was cut, and on we went. You all know where we ended up.
Yesterday was our one year anniversary. We left the house together with plans to meet in front of the MFA. "I'll take the train " I said as drove past the Ox Bow pet shop, "so it will be the same." Then further "Hey, you are wearing the blue suit". He smiled. "Different tie though" I said. (It was gray.) He smiled again.
I called at 6:25 from the bench outside. "I'm here"
He said "You looked pretty sitting there reading your book. I just drove by" He parked in the garage. "I'm walking along the building" "So am I" I said. I reached the corner and saw a man on a cell phone. I wondered if he too was waiting for a date. He was smiling into the phone and I wanted to stop and tell that that was us a year ago.
Instead I squinted and walked forward more. Walking towards me was a man. He looked shorter. Squiting, squinting. The walk looked familiar. But shorter? Closer still. I see a blue shirt, I see a white shirt, but I see a splash of color down the front. Is it red? Is that him? How can I not recognize him? Vanity, I'm cursed, where are my glasses. Then he's right in front of me.
"You changed your tie"
"I had it in my pocket this morning"
So there we were, a year later, he in the awful blue suit and the same red tie, me in my too small shoes, him needing a hair cut, me wondering if my vneck was too low, so much the same.
"Why do you seem shorter?" I wondered allowed as I reached out to hug him hello.
"Shorter?"
"The first time I met you you seemed taller."
"It's because you're used to me now" he said.
So much the same - but different as we linked fingers, mine with my ring, and his familiar in mine - and we walked into the building. I think now what a difference a year makes.
We had a great anniversary.

6.29 More Red Sux
in keeping with the Red Sux theme I offer a more satisfying story...It's the week before the 4th anniversary of my 35th birthday and my ISO (In-significant other) and I receive an invitation to ISO's SIL's (sister in law) birthday party. The party is slated for 6/10 - my anniversary date. I ask ISO if we will be attending the festivities. ISO (watch for changes from ISO to ASO). After some time ISO admits he has tickets to the Red Sox game for that evening and might not go to the party. And oh, by the way -it's your birthday too.Several days pass as ISO says "You don't want to go to the games for your Bday do you?" to which I reply "Not particularly." Subject dropped. Another 2 days pass. SIL informs me that ISO now ASO is not going to her party, he's going to a Red Sox came w/ a friend! Silly me ASSUMED my response meant no we weren't going and not no I don't want to go, ask someone else. The day of the big game comes and I hear that the busload of game-goers are meeting at 3:00 and going to lunch first. As I was out at 3:00 ASO failed to make arrangements for child care and missed the bus. Did I mention IT IS POURING!!! Turns out the game gets cancelled and ASO decides now he want to go to the party with me. NOT. I left him home w/ the child and set off to the party & another one I wanted to go to. The following day is BEAUTIFUL as far as the weather goes. Waltham High is graduating under the hot sun and soft breeze, a party is being held for my niece in honor of her graduation and I am flitting about meeting all my family obligations - ASO is home.As I get in my car I hear on the radio that the Sox are playing: "But, with two outs, two runners on and the Red Sox down by two runs in the ninth inning, Ortiz found himself in a familiar spot -- facing an opposing pitcher with the game hanging in the balance. Ortiz turned Akinori Otsuka's 2-and-2 two-seamer around, depositing it into the right-field bleachers, delivering a 5-4 walk-off victory for the Sox".Awesome ending the crowd goes wild and then I discover the sweetest part of the victory - It was the make up game from teh night before and ASO missed it!Never mess with MAMA CHELLE on her Birthday!

Girl Friday Goes Postal
!!Venting alert!!
I like helping people, I really do. I actually consider myself a people-lovin' problem-solver and thrive in an environment where I can solve random problems on the fly. Does it ever matter that I also have no clue, but am not afraid to let my fingers do the walking? Do I mind being asked about really high-level issues in my first week of work (I'm flattered that you think I'm so brilliant but seriously how am I suppsed to know what is wrong with payroll??!!)? Do I mind dropping everything to answer some totally NON-time sensitive query? Some might ask - is that not what the inter/intra-net is for? No, that is what I am for. Fine. I'm fine with that really. It probably sounds like I'm not, but I am. I was born to be Girl Friday.
What I'm having a harder time coming to terms with is that I seem to give the best parts of myself to my work, dropping everything to scramble, juggle and finesse to help people who I like but don't necessarrily love, only to get home and turn into Greta Garbo: "I just want to be ALONE". The people I love probably think I'm the most unhelpful person on the planet. My friends ask me where the restaurant is where we're meeting and I bitterly send the mapquest link thinking "can't you just look it up"? My SO asks me to return a movie when I'm already leaving the house anyway and of course I do it (I have to walk right by the video store to get to my original destination), yet still I wonder exactly when and how his legs were broken? What is my problem? Do I need to be paid in order to be helpful? Am I actually a Baby-Boomer trapped in the body of a Gen-Xer?
I feel like I already maintain a decent work-life balance, so maybe it's just a question of establishing a different sort of balance. It's not fair to be less than fabulous to the people who are basically required to love me, and be super nice and accomodating all the time to people who pay me or work near me, but where's the right give and take? I give so much at work that I don't even want a chance to take - I just want to be; unbidden, unrequested, unneeded, just for a few moments, honest.

6.24 Office Space
Ok, so as you all know my team is moving to P-. I am trying to do a litte housekeeping and I copy 3 people on my old team on an email. Names changed to protect the innocent.
Here's the text:
Hi. Can you guys order another scanner vs take the one attached to my system? Originally, when Aggie was taking inventory, we decided that I was going to give you the disc and the equipment "pre"move BUT (!) considering I'm going to need one at the WTC and you are going to need to upload software regardless, it may make sense to just order another and ship it direct to your new location. It's less then $200 and I'm sure since 8855 paid for THIS one, 2266 can buy your new one. Thoughts?
So Hannah replies:
Joe would like to keep this one and move it to Providence. Please order another one for yourself. Thanks
OMG. Are you kidding me????? PLEASE. So here's me - not being able to leave well enough alone:
Not a problem. I am going to get a brand new, fancy, state of the art FABULOUS scanner with every bell and whistle known to man EVER. It's going to have gold letters and a scepter and I'm going to name it "Chuck" and we are going to be BEST FRIENDS and scan every day.
You can take this old ratty thing.
Good riddance.
(I unplugged it and it's going to be sitting in your desk in under three minutes.)
Ta!
Stop me, I'm laughing so hard. So the aforementioned "Joe" comes by and HE is laughing so hard. We both basically shook our heads. I think Hannah needs to work for the DMV.

6.23 Red Sucks
let me just start by saying that I realize that this is going to sound ungrateful. And further still that's a problem of my own making. Nevertheless.
And I'll go on record as saying CLEARLY I know I'm not perfect before I say it
but let's get a show of hands of people who think it's a COLLASOLLY stupid idea to go to a red sox game when it's raining out already. When every freaking weather report says that it's going to pour buckets. BUCKETS. Rhymes with something else, doesn't it. I am SO pissed right now.
Doug got an offer to go to a game. He accepts. Gratefully. Asks me "Do you want to go to a game" Yippee, I think, YES. So I say "Yes" then its "Great, we are going with X and his wife."
Huh? Frankly? No thanks. NO THANKS!!!! Why??? Ok, so I get to sit next to a total stranger and be the entertainment. "So, Debbi, where do YOU work" "An event planner, that must be fun? i used to use binkies as napkin rings for baby showers, I should do what you do for a living". Further "So, you're engaged. What are you planning" BLAH BL:AH BLAH. Like I care to talk to you!!!! I spent all week, ALL ALL week being upbeat and positive; I talk all day every day for about 4 hours a day with 18 people about 9 things each. I have NO idea what's going on with my job, I have shit EVERYWHERE in my house, my intended needs to get OFF my back and now I have to be suzy sunshine. He says "Why don't you ever want to do things with people" I'm like Oh my GOD Doug. Just b/c you like the husband, doesn't mean I need to play Patti F'n sunshine with the wife. For crying out loud. And god FORBID I'm quiet (reserved) - you may as well put a sign on me that says "Doug's girlfriend's a bitch." He can sit there, sip beer and squint at the game. THEY don't need to talk. Meanwhile, I'm next to someone’s high school cheerleader wife who thinks it's her responsibility to show me a good time. So it's yap yap yap yap yap in my ear when I am TRYING to watch the game. So NO, I don't want to go but I don't feel like explaining to Captain Terse why I don't want to go (said yes prior so can't come out and say it's cuz it's a double date). I WORK HARDER at it then he does. No one expects him to say squat.
So ok, I'll go to the friggin game. Argh.
So it's today, games tonight, sky opens up and god throws out the wash water. It's booming thunder to beat the band. So we are talking. I'm like: "What’s the plan pal. I think they are going to have two rain delays and call it in the 7th. You and X talking?" He's like "oh, is it raining?" YES. Yes, it's raining. It's raining b/c every goddamn weather report said it was going to . SURPRISE, look! RAIN!!!!!
He calls X, who in a moment of clarity and brilliance says "Hey, it'll be fun. We’ve got a sitter, I live down here in almost Providence and it's not raining here".
Um hmm. No, it's not. But let's see. If only we knew someone who worked in BOSTON who knew what the actual weather was like. Do de do. Who, who? Think...think...???Hmmm, who do we know who works in Boston who would know RIGHT NOW what the weather was like.
So on it goes and I say – somewhat sullenly at this point – as the rain in thrumming on my umbrella 2 hours later – now 4:07pm – “What’s the deal. Are we IN or OUT”.
And we are in. And I don’t want to go, and he alleges he doesn’t want to go, but we are now BOTH going b/c someone invited us at the last minute who Doug doesn’t want to let down. Whose wife is, I’m sure, thinking the same damn thing.
So Doug says “I’ll call you and we’ll set up a place to meet.”
“Great,” I say “Call me when you get to the water towers on 93.”
20 minutes later the phone rings. “It’s me”
“Yup”, I say.
“Yeah, 93 is closed”
“Oh,” I say, “Why’s that?”
“It’s flooded.”
REALLY????? FLOODED??? I wonder why. Could it be b/c of all the f’n rain.
And I'll go on record as saying CLEARLY I know I'm not perfect before I say it

6.22 New sneakers - for what?
So I developed a liking for Ebay. I'm starting off slowly. Bought a few things, sold a few things - you know, testing the waters.
Now I come across my FAVORITE sneaker brand. RYKA. They only make woman's shoes. I find an adorable pair of slip on open toed blue sneaker like things and BAM - I win the auction. So I set off in search of a full fledged pair of sneakers. I am successful in my quest and I win the auction for a great NEW pair of walking sneakers. These go for $80.00 in stores, I get them for $35.99 including shipping.
I'm in my yard last night and my "neighbor"/"family member" asked another neighbor to go for a walk after dinner. In my excitement I exclaim "Hey!I got new sneakers!" Now I must go backwards, I've walked with one woman several times before and with the two of them only once. They walk a bit faster than I do but I struggle and keep up. It's hard to do and embarrasing but I try my best.
So, this "family member" actually looks at me and LAUGHS out loud! She calls over to the neighbor and says "Did you hear that? She said she bought new sneakers!" and continued to laugh!
I ask for an explanation to the humor and she replies that she assumed I didn't want to walk as I am slower than them. I say "I don't hear you offering to slow down every now and then to help me out."
They left without me.
I hope she gets fat!

6.20 Weight Watchers & Me
I am so glad that you have Doug. I know that waking in the middle of the night can be lonely but not anymore! I love when I can't sleep and all I have to do is roll over and reach out and I am off to lala land.

I always come up with some excuse that keeps me fatfatfat! Now I realize that I am the worst person to my self and I just have to get over it. I am really working at it this time!! All for me me me!!
I will post again with the total loss on Thursday and let you all know how well I did!!

6.15 We had an agreement . . .
It's been two weeks "officially".
We had an agreement before he moved in.
She said "I'll do most of it, it's not fair. Your commute is longer and I'll be getting home earlier. I don't mind"
He: Um, Ok. I Mean, if you are sure?
She: Of course I'm sure. I'm better at in anyway, and it'll be quicker. I need to do it for me too, how much more can it be for two?
Stoop, bend, pick. Fold. Stoop, bend pick, up the stairs, down the stairs. Stoop, bend, lift.
He: Did you get the mail?
She: I think I did.
He: Was there anything for me?
She: I think so.
He: Well, where'd you put it?
She: I don't remember.
HIM - to the table, the kitchen, the entryway.
He: Are you sure you got it?
She: I guess not.
Door Opened, flap lifted
He: There it is
She: Oh that's right. I looked at it but there was nothing for me so I put it back in the mailbox. Yours just wasn't as interesting.
Ring, ring
He: Are you sleeping?
She looks athe clock. Squints. Is it 10 already?
She: Yes, I lay down and I must have fallen asleep
He: Why are you sleeping? Are you ok?
She: I'm fine, I'm just tired...yawn
He: Well, I'm almost done. We're going to finish this last one then head home.
She: Did you have fun?
He: It was ok, I'm leaving soon. I tried to call, you know
She: I was sleeping
He: Ok, I'm on my way home. Are you going back to bed?
She: um hmm. ok , bye
then feels guilty because what if he gets in a tragic accident and that last thing she did was act annoyed.
Ring ring
She: Hello
Her: It's me, do you have a minute?
She: No - he's not home and I'm getting things done. Can I call you back???
We had an agreement. Most days I don't mind. I roll over and there he is, a wall warm skin that will comfort me at 3am when I hear a strange noise. The house doesn't invade, there's no one lurking in the bushes, the gas heater is just reseting. Sigh. I think - he's here and I'm safe. Most times I'm happy.
We had an agreement - but it shouldn't include matching socks.

The house doesn't invade, there's no one lurking in the bushes, the gas heater is just reseting. Sigh. I think - he's here and I'm safe. Most times I'm happy.
We had an agreement - but it shouldn't include matching socks.

6.14.06 How do I do This? What a GREAT question
Chrissy raises a good point. The way you can use this site is twofold. You can either POST using the "Blog This" button at the top, and it allows you a full entry - so it gives you a subtitle and a prominent location on the left hand side - like this thing you are reading RIGHT NOW, or you can click on "comments" under someone else's post and have your comments under the entry. So, for example, my first post was about what the site can be for us. Chris(sy) and Michelle both replied with full posts of their own - but! - since their content was commentary, it really can be considered "comments" vs a full post, and, as such, I moved them under the original post they related too. Technical? You betcha - But we'll get the hang of it - we are "Savvy Woman"
WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP???
Aha - Well, I think introductions are in order and maybe some little vignette. So I am going to start with an ICEBREAKER! What fun!!! Let's start with Michelle and ask her to post next.
Michelle - Your topic is a choice of EITHER : What are YOUR birthday goals for 2006-2007 (Michelle celebrated her 35th birthday anniversary the day after mine) or What was your most favorite outfit ever?

6.12.06 Happy Anniversary , 33rd birthday!
So, every year I think it's a good time to state some birthday goals.
Sort of a new years resolution but New Year for me. Given that the anniversary of my 33rd birthday rolled around again, I thought I'd revisit my LAST year’s goals.
They are:
1. 20 push ups per day
2. Go OUT at least once a week
3. Call each family member once per week
4. Buy gifts for celebrations ON TIME!
5. Keep house visitor friendly
6. do (1) condo outreach each week
So, how'd I do?
1. 20 push ups per day
Apparently this was the beginning of my "I need to get in shape, and THIS time, I mean it." goal. I'm fairly certain I did well for about two to three months on this, then backslid, then started again in February. I am currently NOT doing pushups so this is a:
PASS XFAIL
2. Go OUT at least once a week
Apparently this was the beginning of my "I need to get a life” stage, go out, be amongst friends, have a “sex in the city” swingle life instead of being a boring grind. I think as a byproduct I was going to date like a crazy woman and meet Nice Men who would Take Me Places and DO things With Me. (Outside things) I did horrible on this one. Never called people, never responded to voicemails. Never went out. Oh sure, I tried for about a week but then I moved, met Doug, and reverted to my "stay home and get organized" self. My “let me finish this one more thing” self. So on this one I give myself a big
PASS XFAIL
(as a side benefit I DID go out and meet Doug so I give myself a PASS for overall achievement)
3. Call each family member once per week
So far so good. I DID call most everyone at the beginning, although Tony and I got down to once every two to three weeks – but then, there’s only so much one can talk about with ones far away brother. I admit that towards the end, I also backslid on this one but OVERALL, I did keep in touch better then years prior, so I give myself a
XPASS FAIL
4. Buy gifts for celebrations ON TIME!
This one was SO easy. I stopped going out, stopped calling people back, lost friends, so I didn’t get invited to anything thus DIDN”T HAVE TO BUY GIFTS!!!! Whoo hoo.
Ok, not strictly true, but funny, no? I did ok on this one. Had gifts on time but only because I ran around like a mad woman at the last minute driving to said event. Since it caused more stress, then good, I give myself a
PASS Xcompleted FAIL
5. Keep house visitor friendly
HA HA HA hhaaa hahahah whooo whoo hee ha HAA hahahahah HAAA HAH HAA HEEE hee whoo ha ha HOOOO ho hoo hee ha ha hee hoo hoo
PASS XFAIL
6. do (1) condo outreach each week
Ah yes, the great house hunt. God I miss those days of high hopes. Well, I did “outreach”, I was diligent, and I DID buy a house. . .right before the market tanked so the sellers got a GREAT price – so yes, I get a PASS on this one but clearly recognize that an F might have been better!
XPASS FAIL
So, all and all I achieved 2 out of my 6 goals. 33% success rate.
Sigh.
Birthday goals are TOUGH!

Birthday goals are TOUGH!
The First Step - Wading onto The Internet, The World Wide Web so to speak. . .
I've decided that I need to keep in touch better. So - offline from Fidelity - I am going to fill my vanity with a nice, neat little blog/website that allows me to communicate with friends. Since I owe 97 people an email, as a birthday "goal" I've decided to reach out and connect more. Thus this email. I know, the idea of a website is a bit Christmas Letter-ey, being so generic. And it sounds vain - let's devote a site to myself. But it won't be. See, here's what I'm thinking: the next email to follow this one will be a little boring missive similar to what missives will be posted. Read it and decide if you want a boring missive of your own. Then I'll build a little online chat forum and we'll each be friends via email.
I selected a nice group of woman, all whom I think would get along, to share this little site (under construction - at home! - to follow in the weeks ahead). I think many of you have met but might enjoy knowing that there are others out there that share your thoughts, struggles, and would rejoice in your joys. I've got some Mom's with toddlers, some Mom's without, some working girls (no, not THAT kind) and some stay at homes. I've got marrieds, unmarrieds, some second careers, and lots of relatives (so each will know who the other is). It's going to be limited to just us, at first, to build a trust, then, if we all play nicely, we can each add other friends one at a time. Then we'll be a nice network that supports each other. We can root on Pam with her surgeries (no more, we hope) and Heather with her two dog, two kids, two car, and only two hands life, Michelle with her daily chaos as a hockey mom and supermom, Kim as she enjoys her second chance dream career as a teacher, etc. etc.
For ME at least, I think that keeping in touch via web postings will, at a minimum, make it easier when we all do connect b/c we are already caught up.
Ah, vanity - thy name is Deb.
Let me know what you think. You won't have to post either, you can just read if you like!
