...and Also With You

Dear Dark Haired Woman at the L. Library

Hi there! I know we haven’t met yet so it unlikely you'll read this but I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and say hi. My name is Deb. I was at the library today with my daughter Ellie. We were sitting on the floor when you and your daughter came in. I know it must have been tough for you, with us so close, to completely ignore us and not even utter a polite greeting so I want to commend you on your self control. Truly, that kind of iron will is not something you see every day!

Not that you really NEEDED to talk to us though. I mean, we were pretty busy after all. What was it, 8? 10? minutes that I sat and played puppets with your daughter while you looked for books? I’m not exactly sure of the time – because with my watching Ellie with one eye, and playing puppets with your daughter, well, I just wasn’t staring at the clock, you know what I mean? Anyway, so I was pretty busy. Don’t get me wrong mind you. I’m not suggesting your daughter was irksome, or that she needed me to play with her. I freely did so and enjoyed it. I just was, well, surprised that you couldn’t muster up a half smile. But perhaps you were concentrating.

I’m glad at the end you found lots of lovely books. Ultimately, I think the lesson you want for your child, for ANY child really, is to be concerned with education foremost and manners and social mores second. So I’m sorry that I put you on the spot when I wished you goodbye. I know I took your attention away from your task at hand, so I really appreciate the grunt.

Hopefully I’ll see you and your daughter next week though. Maybe we can do it all over again? If you have trouble recognizing me, look for the one being gracious to strangers. Or perhaps you’ll have trouble recognizing that too?

Best to you
D
