The Politics While Dancing

Speaking of Politics. After we discussed this last night, I'm on the floor typing my blog entry and my husband laeans down over the bed discloses that he bet BOTH Brian and Dave $100 a piece at Dierdre's wedding last April that Obama would take it.

"I offered then a chance to get out of it today for $50 each" he said.
"WHAT???" (That's me. Astonished.)
"I said, listen, you can each give me $50 now to walk away from the bet. The way it's looking now, it's 4 to 1 that you both are going to owe me $100 in November. So i'll let you walk now, and save yourselves $50."
I'm mentally sidetracked. I was AT that wedding. "Ok, but what if McCain wins?" I said.
He replied "that's why it's a gamble. Hey. I'm giving them an out. Brian actually thinks it's a great deal. He just can't switch ponies like that."
"Um hmm" I assented. All the while thinking my husband bet on the election at a WEDDING? then I vaguely remembered the wine at dinner and some high fiving amonst the crowd. Bunch of white guys in suits. Sure. It's all coming back to me.
My husband continues. "Actually, that's not a bad bet. If it's 4 to 1 for Obama, and I bet $25 on McCain (per bet), that covers me both ways. Obama wins, I pay off the McCain bet and I'm left with $150. If McCain wins, I'm DOWN $50, but I've saved the other $150 I'd have had to pay out. Hmm"
I watched him go to that place. That place where his eyes glaze over and he mentally calculates odds. My little economics award winning husband.
He gets up and leaves the room.
I hear typing.

And I'm on the floor thinking "Really? So, what, there's an offshore Caymen Islands operation that takes these kind of bets? REALLY?"

At a WEDDING no less.
